MS Travel Medicine - PRE TRAVEL

Immunizations

  • Vaccines Available at IMA: TDaP, Hep A, Hep B, Japanese Encephalitis, Meningococcal, MMR, Pneumococcal, Polio, Rabies, Typhoid, Varicella, Zoster (USE THE SMART SETS)

Travel Kit Items

MEDICATIONS YOU MUST PRESCRIBE

  • All chronic medications taken regularly (and make sure they have enough for trip)
  • Include Epi-Pens and Medical Supplies (insulin pen needles, test strips, etc.) if they use them
  • Antibiotics for Traveler's Diarrhea:
    • Ciprofloxacin (750mg x 1 day or 500mg BID x 3 days), OR
    • Azithromycin (1g x 1 day or 500mg daily x 3 days)
  • Antimalarials: Always check resistance patterns prior to prescribing!
    • Chloroquine (500mg weekly): Start 1-2 weeks prior to travel, continue 4 weeks after return
    • Atovaquone-Proguanil = Malarone (250-100mg tab daily): Start 1-2 days prior to travel, continue for 7 days after return
    • Doxycycline (100mg daily): Start 1-2 days prior to travel, continue for 4 weeks after return
    • Mefloquine (250mg weekly): Start at least 2 weeks prior to travel, continue for 4 weeks after return
  • Treatment for Altitude Sickness: Make sure to address risk of high-altitude travel for your patient
    • Acetazolamide (125mg BID): Start day prior, end 2 days after ascent. Not for use in patients with sulfa or PCN allergy

OTC MEDICATIONS YOU CAN PRESCRIBE AND/OR RECOMMEND THEY BRING

  • Analgesics/Antipyretics: Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen
  • Anti-Diarrheal / GI: Loperamide, Bismuth, Antacids
  • Respiratory Supportive Care: Antihistamines, Decongestants, Cough Suppressants
  • Motion Sickness Medications
